The numbers
A winter jacket that is genuinely warm enough for snow costs roughly RM150–400 to buy in Malaysia. Renting the equivalent is RM50 for 10 days.
Add delivery within West Malaysia (RM8) and dry cleaning (RM20, waived if you clean it yourself) and one jacket for one trip costs you about RM78 all in. The RM100 deposit comes back to you the day you return it, so it is not a cost — it is money parked temporarily.
So the comparison is roughly RM78 versus RM150–400, for one trip.
The part people forget: it is not just one jacket
A cold-weather trip is rarely solved by a jacket alone. You also need a sweater, probably snow boots, and a hat, scarf and gloves. Bought separately, that is a meaningful amount of money for items you will use once, and boots in particular take up a lot of luggage space for something you will not wear again in Malaysia.
The honest framing is not "renting is cheaper than buying". It is: a winter wardrobe in a tropical country is a wardrobe you use once and store forever. Renting removes the storing-forever part.
When you should buy instead
- You travel somewhere cold more than once a year. At that frequency the maths turns over fairly quickly, and owning is simply more convenient.
- You are going for an extended period — a semester, a work posting, a month or more. Rental is priced for trips, not for living somewhere.
- Base layers, socks and underwear. Always buy these. They are worn against the skin, they are cheap, and we do not rent them.
- You genuinely love the jacket. That is a perfectly good reason and no spreadsheet overrules it.
The middle option most people miss
You do not have to choose one or the other for everything. A common approach: buy your own thermal base layers and socks, and rent the expensive outer items — the down jacket, the boots. You end up owning the cheap things you would want fresh anyway, and renting the costly things you would otherwise store for a decade.
